I want to welcome you to our College AGNR Newsletter Update. Being a part of a very active College, there are so very many great things to highlight and talk about. Knowing that in this news update we will not begin to touch a tenth of what all goes on, our hope with this newsletter is that it will give you a flavor of what has happened over the past few months. Our target audience for this information is you…our great alumni, students and stakeholders that passionately support the Dick and Mary Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. |

For the past 21 years, I have had the honor and pleasure of working for TAMUK as head of the Citrus Center in Weslaco, initially as Deputy Center Director of the two A&M centers there, and since 2008 as Director of the Citrus Center. My first job in South Africa was at the Citrus & Subtropical Fruit Research Institute where I worked for 5 years on, amongst other things, assisting in the establishment of a certified virus-free citrus budwood program. |

In the summer of 1990, when I was hired at TAIU, I was told by the Agriculture Dean at that time to: 1) Teach Agriculture Science/Education courses and re-establish the certification of Agriculture Science student teachers at this university; 2) Create a Graduate Program again for Master’s students and teach/graduate new Graduate Students in AGSC again; 3) employ a 100% teaching position, …. BUT that my first job was to; 4) “Make south Texas FFA Chapters like us, at this university, again.” |

My name is Nora Carrillo. I am a Hispanic, first generation student who is majoring in a Bachelor of Animal Science Pre-Vet. I am from a small border town named Quemado, between Eagle Pass and Del Rio. After graduation, I plan to further my education by applying to veterinary schools of choice such as Texas A&M University College Station, Purdue University, etc and earning a DVM license. My career goal is to become a mixed practice veterinariam and work in a clinic in order to learn the requirements neccessary to open a clinic of my own in a rural community where needed most. In establishing a clinic, I will apply One Health principles and develop a program that will aid students, who are pursuing a career in the animal science field, specifically the veterinary field component, throughout their high school and college journey. |
